When something happens to your home you might never feel safe again. Your home is your castle. It’s a safe haven where you can relax, safe in the knowledge no harm will come to you. That’s why it’s very important you take action now to prevent anything bad from happening in the future.
Once it happens it’s too late. There are a big selection of things you can do to make your home unappealing to intruders. Of course if someone has their heart set on breaking in there is not too many things which would prevent them, but even little things would scare of nearly all burglars.
Make sure you lock the doors
Although this sounds obvious it’s still something that happens a lot. People either forget or they can’t be bothered. If someone is going around checking for unlocked doors, finding them locked will automatically send them on their way.
You should have a secure deadbolt lock that’s made of high quality steel. Not something that could easily be pulled open by someone who goes to the gym. If you have sliding doors those also need to be properly secured. It’s all too easy to lift sliding doors of the tracks.
Install an alarm system
If you want to spend a little money you could fit an alarm system. This is obviously the biggest deterrent and will scare anyone away as soon as it starts blasting out through the neighborhood. They will come in a whole range of prices. Just choose the best you can afford.
With technology so advanced there is a lot more options than there used to be. You can actually watch live video footage of the security cameras and watch what’s going on. Mind you, I don’t know how pleasant it would be to watch someone break into your home.
Don’t let people know you’re not there
You wouldn’t have a big sign advertising the fact nobody was home, would you? But leaving your house for a prolonged period of time could become obvious to seasoned burglars if you leave it dark all the time. You need to get some timer switches so your television and lights will come on at certain times of the night.
The great thing about these is you can choose what times they switch on and off. If you set them to your regular pattern nobody will be any the wiser. You can also forward your home phone to your cell. If anyone tries to call you it seems like you are in your house.
Be friendly with neighbors
An easy way to safeguard your home is to become friendly with your neighbors. They make good security guards, especially if you have one of those neighbors who likes to look out their window a lot. We all have one of them.
You can give them your mobile number and they can call you if they see anything suspicious happening around your property. Also get them to pick up the newspapers if you have them delivered. If someone sees a big pile of newspapers lying on the porch they obviously know someone is away.
