If you’re one of the unlucky ones that lives in the wrong place you could be subject to all sorts of cruel weather. And I don’t just mean a little rain. This stuff is the real deal. Wind so strong it can rip your house apart. Rain so heavy it can force you to swim to work. It’s tough living some place like this. But there’s not much you can do about it unless you move. If not, the only thing you can do is make sure your house survives.
The last thing you want to do is take a risk. Your home is too expensive to be taking risks. If there’s a chance of severe weather you need to turn it into a fortress. Do the best you can. Allow it every possible chance to make it through the night without half the roof ripped off. You might know how to do it. Maybe not. Here’s a few good suggestions to safeguard your home, in case you haven’t thought of them.
Make sure the roof is safe
You should get someone to come in and take a look at your roof. There might be broken tiles you don’t know about. That’s a perfect place for water to get in and do some damage to your home. Maybe there’s none coming in at the moment, but wait until the wind is so strong it could send water anywhere. It also lets wind get underneath the rest of the tiles. If the wind is strong enough it could rip everything off your roof. All that damage because of one broken tile is definitely not worth the hassle. You’ll be kicking yourself if you don’t at least get it checked.
The roof is a target
I’m sure you realize your roof is pretty venerable. Once it goes it will create all kinds of damage. But your roof could be perfectly fine at the moment. Having trees close to it with big hanging branches is a definite problem. If they snap of during horrible weather it could send the debris straight into the roof creating lots of damage. Once that happens you have a much better chance of suffering all the same problems we talked about in the last paragraph. That’s why you should have the tree cut by a professional who can cut down all the dangerous branches.
Flying cows could be a problem
If you have seen the movie, Twister you know the damage a cow can do when he smashes into something. That doesn’t just apply to cows. Anything that can be picked up will be thrown about. If they smash into your window it doesn’t stand a chance. Now you are in real trouble. As well as objects being thrown into your home, all the elements will be flying though the hole in force. It will destroy everything on the inside. Shutters on the windows will protect them from flying objects, but maybe not something as big as a cow.
Use heavy outside furniture
It you have light furniture in the garden it will fly away. The lighter it is, the less severe the weather needs to be for accidents to happen. If you choose furniture that’s heavy there’s less chance of it flying away. Nothing is going to survive if a twister hits right on top of it, but you won’t always have twisters right above your house. It’s also an idea to have chains lying around so you can secure them to something. The furniture might still get damaged, but it will stop it from flying around and becoming a danger to people.
