They then spend some of the year at home and a considerable amount of time in their dream location.

Get friendly with the neighbors
You really need to start getting friendly with your neighbors because they will be a great line of defense in case anyone tries anything. They could call the police as soon as they suspect anything suspicious and then call you to let you know what is going on. You know what people are like when they are not friends with you. Although they are nice people they might decide not to risk anything and they will keep quit while you lose everything.
Install a great security system
Not only will a security alarm scare the life out of the intruder, but you also might get to see it on film. Security systems are definitely not the same as the ones you would have had installed in your house a few years ago. I guess we can thank technology for moving so fast. If you have a certain mobile phone that allows you to install an app you can even get a message when the intruder has been spotted. Then watch his face as he tries to run out of there in a hurry.
Leave valuables in storage
If there is quality storage space close to where you live you could throw everything inside before you leave. The only hassle would be coming across and having to put everything back inside your home. If you’re staying in a cheap country you could pay someone to do it for you even if you’re not the richest person in the world. Even if you spend 6 months there then one day to take everything out of storage is maybe worth it because of the risk.
Keep the place lit
People are afraid of getting caught when breaking into a house, so it makes sense that they would be more likely to do it when the sun goes down. You might think there is nothing you can do from a different country, but that is not the case. If you don’t want to use any electricity while you’re away you can use the sun. The only way you can do that is by buying solar powered lights and you can have them inside your windows and laying around in your garden.
Looking lived in
If your home is easy to spot from the street them some people will notice you don’t seem to be around. Your lights are never on and your curtains are consistently open. The worst one has to be when the mail man leaves letters bulging out of your letter box. Either ask a friend, or you can maybe pay someone who is local to close your curtains at night and take your mail into the house for you. It might confuse the people who want to break in and they won’t risk it in the end.
