Driving Safely Matters
Statistics show that the estimated death toll on the world`s roads account for the loss of life of an average of 3,287 people every day. Over a 12 month period that means 1,200,000 fatalities caused by traffic accidents.
The figures related to deaths on the road of young people are horrific. The leading cause of death among people age from 15 to 20 is through traffic accidents.
What are the causes of accidents on the road, and how can many be prevented? First of all let`s look at the person behind the wheel-the driver. His, (or her), state of mind can greatly influence his driving. Obviously tiredness can play its part in making the driver less alert, and slow down the response time. But on top of that such emotions as anger, being anxious or absent-minded can play their part in causing car accidents. Cases of road rage where people have lost their lives have been well documented over the years. Most countries run anti-drink driving campaigns in an effort to make motorists aware of the risks involved with alcohol. Not forgetting too that certain prescription and over the counter drugs can impair reaction time.
Defensive driving can help in avoiding traffic accidents. Being aware of other drivers and pedestrians means a driver is less likely to have an accident. Keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front is important. If the driver ahead suddenly puts his brakes on, will the car behind have sufficient time to brake and stop? It`s amazing how many accidents take place in that way with catastrophic consequences when driving at high speed. Keeping asafe distance is even more important in wet or icy conditions.
Motorists get distracted by using the cellphone. In many countries using the cellphone while driving is now against the law, and a driver can be punished for doing it.
What about the automobile itself? Being safety conscious involves keeping a vehicle fully roadworthy. Brakes should work efficiently, and should be checked by a garage regularly. Tires should be at the correct pressure, and have sufficient tread, otherwise the car may lose grip in wet conditions. Seat belts are fitted for a reason. A driver shouldn`t rely on airbags to save him in an accident. The first line of defense is the seat belt. All a car`s lights need to be in proper working order. Headlights should be used not just so the driver can see, but also to be seen.
Apart from the safety angle, it`s good to bear in mind that safe, smooth driving, going at proper speeds, in a well maintained vehicle, will also help to lower the amount of fuel the car uses.
