class="meta-nav">→

In terms of bathroom fixtures and designs, bathroom vanities refer to the cabinets that are positioned under the bathroom sink. Although there are different types of materials used for bathroom vanities, the most common are marble and tile.

The design allows for the storage of toothbrushes, makeup, soap and other bathroom related accessories. In some instances, bathroom vanities may be sold as a packaged unit of the sink as well. One of the most important considerations when making the purchase is the available space in the bathroom.

It is equally important to note that the design must complement the appearance of the bathroom. Some bathroom vanities may be sold together with mirrors or built-in medicine cabinets. This means that the actual choice would be entirely up to you.

Why People Choose Bathroom Vanities

It is undeniable that the size of bathrooms varies from one home to another. With the functionality provided by bathroom vanities, it is not surprising the majority of people actually prefer double bathroom vanities. In fact, the popularity is slowly gaining ground among homeowners, property agents and even developers. Double bathroom vanities must be installed properly in order to maintain their beautiful appearance, as well as cool ambience.

Some reasons for double bathroom vanities are based on:

1. Number of people. One of the most common reasons someone chooses a double bathroom vanity is the number of family members in the particular household. This is especially true if the people living in the house are adults who have almost the same hectic morning schedules to keep either to go to work or school. The presence of two sinks would definitely help resolve issues of one-person hogging bathroom time for an extended period.

2. Family with children. Another potential benefit provided by double bathroom vanities is when it comes to families with two or more children living with them. There is no question the bathroom can become one of the most crowded and in demand portions of the house at certain times of the day.

To help prevent traffic jams, installation of double bathroom vanities can facilitate usage of the sink by allowing at least two people to use it simultaneously. It can also prevent morning tensions brought about by children fighting for positions on who will brush first.

3. Maximizing bathroom space. Sometimes, double bathroom vanities are the best way to maximize extra space in bathrooms without making it look out of sync. It would be quite out of the ordinary to have two bathtubs in a regular household or even two showers for that matter.

However, having two sinks on top of double bathroom vanities will not look out of the ordinary. This is why one of the most common and easiest decisions for people with extra bathroom space in their house is to install double bathroom vanities. Furthermore, the presence of this fixture will improve the overall appeal of the bathroom rather than create an eyesore.

4. The need for more counter space. Aside from the storage space provided by double bathroom vanities they also allow for more counter space. This means that there is no need to install any additional fixture to hold bathroom accessories right beside the sinks.

The beauty of this feature is that after you use the bathroom accessories you can neatly tuck them under the sink to leave the counter space looking orderly and clean.

5. Less clutter, less headaches. Because of the wide availability of space and storage provided by double bathroom vanities, the sometimes irritating and stressful clutter found within the bathroom can be avoided. Things can be neatly arranged in the storage space or on the counter space, to ensure everything looks orderly when you enter the bathroom.

6. More options for mirrors. The immense space provided by double bathroom vanities give you more options on the placement, as well as the design of your bathroom mirrors. You can have a single mirror that spans the space of the entire double bathroom vanity, or you can have two mirrors side-by-side corresponding to the position of the sinks.

With so many options and varying preferences of homeowners, there is no doubt the use of double bathroom vanities can be seen as welcome relief. The practicality derived from installing bathroom vanities is one reason they are steadily becoming constant fixtures in every household.

Miguel Salcido is an avid blogger, father of 2 and a recent proud home owner. id="more-663">

Purchasing a new unit is often not an option, particularly for those living paycheck-to-paycheck. Luckily, these problems (and more) can usually be solved using simple repair techniques.

Frost

Frost accumulates around the tubes which run along the freezer. This common occurrence is typically kept in control via automatic defroster systems.

Automatic defroster systems are fairly common components to contemporary refrigerators. The defrosting system is comprised of a heating unit, timer, and kill-switch which circulates and thaws throughout the day. Defrosting cycles typically span six to eight hours. A malfunctioning system could restrict ventilation and lead to several problems.

Freeze

The inside of a working refrigerator is typically 36 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit, whereas freezers operate between zero and five degrees.

However, sometimes temperatures in the refrigerator can drop to degrees which freeze foods not meant to be frozen. This is often corrected by adjusting the temperature settings on the unit itself. The temperature control box can sometimes malfunction and require a replacement.

Beside the temperature settings, dust and poor air-flow could be cause the unit to work harder than necessary, or cause in uneven distribution of temperature. Check for restricted airways, vents or tubes to ensure the ensure your refrigerator is operating properly.

Ensure all doors are properly sealed. Worn-out door seals could cause too much airflow, resulting in the front of the refrigerator being too warm, and the back causing excess freezing.

Leak

A leaking refrigerator is a messy problem with a fairly easy fix. Tubes and drains can often become clogged with kitchen gunk or accumulated dust. Flush all tubes and check for blockages along the drain path and pan.

Dirty condenser coils and tubes can attract lint and other objects which clog drains and cause leaks.

If the unit is rattling rather than leaking, loose parts are often to blame. Ensure the unit is level and all feet are planted firmly to the floor. Check all tubes, coils, and stands to ensure they are tightly attached to the refrigerator.

Although a broken refrigerator could spell disaster, those adept at simple do-it-yourself projects, can purchase the appliance parts and repair the refrigerator themselves; <a

As folks have found more and more uses for hydrogen peroxide over the years, it has gained the distinction of being one of the most powerful disinfectants to effectively eradicate germs.

The most well know trait of peroxide is that it is toxic to germs, and is used by many healthcare experts for disinfection. When it comes to the home, this cleaning agent does more than tidy up your floors; it can help protect your family’s health.

Uses for the Home

Germs, parasites and toxins are all around us, and it is inevitable that you, your loved ones, pets, and even your occasional visitor can usher in a string of harmful microorganisms to your home. Hydrogen peroxide is a simple and efficient way to sanitize every inch of your home and eradicate these disease causing germs that threaten your family’s safety.

Here are just some of the easy ways in which hydrogen peroxide can be used for your home:

1. Disinfecting Cutting Boards

As you cut, slice, and chop all kinds of meat and fish on your cutting board, it can easily accumulate germs and bacteria that can infect your food. As it is used in the preparation of meals you serve your loved ones, it is important to make sure that they are more than just clean, but germ-free.

Using a 3% hydrogen peroxide, pour a few drops onto your cutting board and dab it around using a cloth or sponge. Let it stand until you see it effervescing. This means that the hydrogen peroxide is doing its magic and killing toxic microbes. Finish off by wiping and rinsing it thoroughly.

2. Disinfecting Kitchen Sinks

Even though you do all your washing in the sink, it is still a common area for bacteria infestation. To rid it off any toxin residue, pour a few ounces of 3% hydrogen peroxide around and brush it thoroughly.

3. Disinfecting your Bathroom

Shower molds and mildews are not just unsightly; they can also trigger allergies. To completely eradicate them, simply spray a few squirts of hydrogen peroxide on your bathroom surfaces and allow it to sit until it fizzes out. You can also opt to spray it over them after every bath to prevent shower mold and mildew from forming.

4. Other Uses

As one of the most versatile substances in your home, hydrogen peroxide can be used for a number of tasks that includes cleaning your dentures, brushes, bath scrubbers, and sink tools. They can also be applied to the surface of your refrigerator to bring out its natural glow.

If you have pets, then you can also make use of this solution to wash away their urine and vomit.

Thanks to hydrogen peroxide, keeping the home clean and germ free has become easier and much more manageable.

Carla is a long time writer about home safety and cleanliness with a particular expertise in →

Sheds are a really versatile building that any home DIY enthusiast should really consider investing in if they haven’t already got one. Like so many things sheds are something that many people don’t think they need but once they get one it really doesn’t take long for them to become reliant on them. If you don’t have a garden shed and don’t think you need one here are some ideas that might change your mind.

A place for your tools

Sheds are a great way of getting organised, if you have a passion for fixing and building things it can be easy to amass a large collection of tools which can become quite over whelming. This becomes more of a problem if you have young children in the house that for safety reasons should really be kept away from the tools. So where does your over flowing tool box go? Well the obvious answer is a shed, a purpose built space in the garden where the tools will be easily on hand when you need them. Most sheds can be securely locked so they are safe from theft or being gotten at by young children. This all helps to keep your home and garden well organised, neat and tidy.

A make shift green house

If you are short on space in your garden sheds can be quite multi functional and could be used in a lot of different gardening projects. Many keen gardeners with space restrictions use them as a green house, sheds with a window still let in a lot of light so strategically placing your plants can still afford them a good amount of light whilst keeping them warmer in the colder months.

You very own work shop

A lot of DIY tasks can be quite messy, so best taken out into the garden, but if you’re stuck outside your at the mercy of the elements, a garden shed is a great place to have set aside for all your messier jobs, keeping your house tidy without you having to be overly worried about being careful. It can also be nice to have a place set aside for all these jobs to help you feel like you’re in work mode when you go out to your shed.

A retreat from your house

For many people your houses can be quite a hectic stressful place with family life and all kinds of other things going on, a shed can be a nice place to just retreat from it all and have your own space. A lot of sheds being built now are actually quite large, more like log cabins and can be treated as an extension to your home which is separate from your house, with people brining in comfy arm chairs, TVs and all sorts of other things to help relax and get away from it all.
Sheds can be used for such a wide variety of purposes no tool enthusiasts should struggle to find a use for one, if you don’t have a shed maybe it’s time treat yourself?

<!--

class="meta-nav">→

The addition of a tile backsplash to your kitchen is an easy way to freshen up the look of your kitchen quickly, and without spending a lot of money. There are several different types of tile to choose from, and many more colors. This gives you the freedom to pick out a unique look for your home. A backsplash does wonders to highlight beautiful cabinetry, new appliances, or just update the overall look of your kitchen. The project is moderately easy, depending on how big your kitchen is and how much experience you have.

Things you’ll need

• Tile
• tile grout acrylic tile mastic cloth
• 80 grit sand paper
• drop cloth
• Level
• tape measure
• rubber float
• tile cutter score/snap
• trowel
• caulk gun
• sponge

1. Prepare the wall-take off switch plates and outlet covers
2. Sand wall with paper and wipe down with damp rag
3. Measure center and mark
4. Apply mastic. Scoop tile mastic with trowel. Hold at a slight angle cover the wall with enough mastic for eight tiles.
5. Start by settling the tiles from the bottom of the vertical center line. The edge of the first tile should be right on the line. Push tile into mastic. Continue stetting working out in both directions.
6. When you need to cut a tile to size, mark the tile and use the score and snap cutter.
7. Apply more mastic and continue with the second row of tiles.
8. Allow the mastic to dry overnight.
9. According to the directions on the grout, mix it and scoop it out using a rubber float. Smear it across the surface of the tile diagonally to the grout lines.
10. After grouting the entire backsplash, clean the surface with a sponge and clean water. Be sure to rinse the sponge often. Wipe diagonally to the grout lines so as not to pull any grout from the joints.
11. Wait for 30-45 minutes for the grout to set and for a hazy film to appear on the tiles. Buff out the film with a clean dry cloth.
12. Squeeze a thin bead of tub and tile caulk the same color as the caulk into the joint at the very bottom of the backsplash, in the corners and between the tiles and the cabinets. Smooth it down with a wet finger.

Be sure to let your tiles and grout set and dry completely before recovering your outlet and switch covers. Do keep in mind that you may have to purchase longer screws to compensate for the width of the tile. Once you’ve reinstalled your switch covers, take a moment to enjoy your hard work!

This article was written by <a

Keep a large folder of your child’s best work and toss out anything that won’t fit.

There’s no doubt that moving is a big, stressful event. But you can make it easier by bringing only the things that you really need and want to your new place. The act of going through and cleaning out your material possessions helps to prepare you for your next grand adventure.

Kenneth McCall builds creative and innovative tools for customers seeking self storage units. For example, interior designers use hot glue in a number of applications. Everyone is aware of gluing sewing trims to lampshades, picture frames and such but there are larger applications for hot glue that the home DIY’er can learn from interior decorators.

How Hot Glue Works

The glue stick is inserted into a heat gun, pulling the trigger activates a heating element, turning the glue to liquid, which is then used in the application. When the trigger is released, the heating element turns off. While the glue is still liquid, objects are pressed together, and then held until the glue cools. Once cool, the glue returns to a solid.

Mouldings and Trims

PVC or lightweight foam moulding is beautiful. For small trim, hot glue can be used to attach it to ceilings and wall corners. Once secure, the trim can be painted. Larger trims need construction industrial hot glue adhesive to stay in place, but holding it for hours is something most people do not have the time to do. Regular hot glue placed strategically can hold the piece until the construction adhesive cures. Attach trim to windows, and moulding to walls to create spectacular effects. No more nailing and filling fine holes in wood trim; the glue holds thin trims to the wall.

Reupholster Furniture

Gather heavy-duty fabric such as canvas, corduroy or denim. Measure and cut the fabric for each section of the furniture piece. Make sure to add a seam allowance while measuring and cutting.Glue the pieces together and place over the piece, or glue the new upholstery directly onto the piece itself. Make sure the glue spots are out of sight, and the fabric sections overlap so any seams are hidden. The piece will look like new, and a slipcover in décor- matching fabric can be made if desired.

Custom Headboard

Turn plain plywood or MDF into a spectacular headboard with a hot glue gun. The wood will stand against the wall being held in place by the bed. Glue trims and mouldings to the top, sides and front of the wood. Paint or stain the project. You can create a different shapes with the trims. Glue wallpaper motifs, magazine pictures or other decorations inside the shapes. Glue lightweight padding, such as thin foam or quilt batting on the board. Cover with fabric and secure it in back with hot glue. Decorate the front of the fabric with glued- on buttons, trims and so forth.

Your child needs a space which is welcoming and bright, and at the same try to create something interesting too. The following are some simple tips to help towards an ideal living space for your loved one.

Bright Colours
The done thing used to be decorated nurseries to keep a baby calm and relaxed by using soft pale colours. But increasingly families are now opting for a bolder and exciting look for them to be in. Babies can be fascinated by the brighter shades and may even enjoy them. So when you are looking for new bedding, primary colours with busy patterns are a good place to start.

Window Treatments
Large, loose window treatments can be dangerous for a toddler. Kids roman blinds are a safer option as they fit securely inside the window, leaving nothing to get tangled up in for the child. The cords are out of reach with the use of hooks that are too high for toddlers to get to. This also helps towards have a clean, polished look. The greatest advantage with using this type of roman blind is that there is a massive choice of fabrics available featuring fun designs that hopefully your child will enjoy.

Family Portraits
The first thing you probably think about putting on the walls of the room would be your kids favourite cartoon characters. You could also try splitting these up with using mounted photos of their relatives. This will help them remember or recognise their family which may be difficult if they live far away and can’t see them on a regular basis. This can also help trigger stories which involve their relatives.

Wall Decals
A new feature which has come in recently is using wall decals. They are wall clings that use landscapes or a garden. What’s good about this is that if your child grows out of a particular picture or design, you can replace it with little fuss. This is a much easier task than it would usually be if you were using wallpaper. There is a huge choice for them too; which gives you the opportunity to create the perfect nursery for your special one.

Share Your Personality
You needn’t stick to the most commonly used themes for a nursery. Try to add a dash of your own personality within the room. Bright colours with a modern feel will help towards a more contemporary nursery. Try focusing on scenes of wildlife or nature to start instilling the wild outdoors in your child. You could use swirls, stripes and painted balloons to create a nursery that is reminiscent of a fairground. The skies the limit to how great you can make the nursery when you let your imagination take over. Whatever you decide to choose, your child is certain to love it, simply because you love it.

<!--

id="more-592">

One of the most popular home improvements at the minute is the addition of a conservatory or orangery to the house. As well as creating valuable extra space, they create a truly unique space which merges the indoors with outdoors. This unusual space can be used for a whole range of different purposes and is doesn’t have to just be used as a space to grow plants in.

Kitchen Conservatories

One of the most common locations for a conservatory is off the kitchen. This allows you to create a beautiful large, bright and airy space for cooking and preparing food in. As many older houses had rather small kitchens, this can help to really transform a house and help change cooking from a chore to an enjoyable experience.

Dining Room Conservatories

If you already have a large enough kitchen, you could still have the conservatory constructed on the kitchen to create a large kitchen dining area. This would allow you to sit eating your meals in the sunshine without worrying about bugs landing on your food or having to drag out the garden furniture.

Lounge Conservatories

Rather than having the conservatory off the kitchen, you could use it to create an attractive lounge room for the whole family to relax in. Through the summer the doors can be opened up, creating an area for people to relax in the sunshine, while being protected from the wind.

Playroom Conservatories

We all know that children love to play in the garden and get dirty. A conservatory can provide an “in between” step, allowing the children to go into the garden and play, then come back into the conservatory to play, without carrying dirt through the rest of the house.

Adding a conservatory to your home will not only provide you with the space that you need now, but it will also add value to your house so that when you decide to sell the house you will be able to sell it for a bit more. With that said, once you have your beautiful new conservatory on your house, you probably won’t want to even think about moving house!

Vale Garden Houses design and manufacture bespoke <a
