How To Create More Space in Your Home

Not everyone has the means to move home to a larger property when their family grows. That is why for many it is important to make as much use of their existing home as possible. As an alternative to moving, some build an extension, but not everyone can do that-cost being one of the main reasons.

This being the case, how can you make the most of your available space, maximizing it as much as possible?

Placing stand-alone lamps and light sources in the corners of your room will serve to stretch the corners of the room. Cluttered parts of the room then become less conspicuous.

Mirrors can create illusions. Do not go berserk and start hanging mirrors from every wall. But, placed in strategic areas, such as hanging a large one on a wall can make the room appear larger than it is. Yes, it is a trick of the eye, but it does work.

Are you a hoarder? As time passes we accumulate more and more possessions, furnishings, and other bits and pieces. And unless you are disciplined enough you can quickly become overrun with useless stuff that just clutters your rooms up. Car boot sales can be a very useful way of getting rid of these once prized possessions. Or, try selling them on an auction site such as eBay, and you will possibly get some cash for them. Depending on what the items are, can they be given away to charity shops so someone else can benefit from them? If you really can not bear the thought of parting with your `junk` then box it up and store it elsewhere, a shed or garage perhaps.

I find that having drawers underneath my bed helps to conserve much needed space. Spare bedding can be very bulky, so storing duvets, sheets, pillows etc underneath the bed frees up a lot of space elsewhere. If you already have wardrobes have you considered adding a drawer to the bottom part of one?

Back to impressions. Storage is best either below or above eye level. If units are in your normal line of vision it gives the impression of your room having less space. Put things like suitcases on top of wardrobes if possible where they are out of the way.

Place large items such as beds against walls if possible, and not in the middle of the room. That way you give the appearance of having more space. And while that spare chair might look good, is it ever used? How much space is it taking up?

Shelves can be better proposition than bookcases where space is concerned. Bookcases take up a fair amount of room, whereas shelves can take up hardly any.

Once more back to perceptions. You should carefully consider how you will decorate your home. Apart from making a room lighter, when choosing paints keep to the lighter colours. Dark colours can make a room closed in, and smaller than it is.

Part of the above is down to illusion, the rest is down to freeing up your space to give you more room in your home.
