There comes a time when everyone needs something new. Sometimes that will include furniture. Luckily this doesn’t happen often because the old stuff lasts so long, but there will eventually have to go. But the question is, what will you do with it? There is always the option of giving it to someone you know, maybe family, but you might be better trying to get some money back for it.
At some point in your life it obviously mattered enough for you to go out and buy it. It must have some value. Even though you hate the sight of it, to other people it could be like treasure. They’ve probably never sat on a chair so soft in their life. You have to act fast. Once you order new stuff you are racing against the clock to make space for its arrival. So this is what you do.
Decide on a price
So what do you think you’d get for your stuff? Think back to how much you paid for it. If it was expensive and it doesn’t look like it’s been dragged behind a bus you might still get enough money to treat yourself to something nice. If it’s battered and torn you are probably better hoping someone takes it away for free.
Be careful and not throw out anything that could be considered an antique. We’ve all heard stories about someone buying a table at a car-boot sale for a few dollars, only to sell it for hundreds of thousands years later. If you think you might have something valuable you might want to get it valued.
Find somewhere to sell it
You need to find people interested in what you’re offering. Here are some examples:
Yard sale – If you have a lot of furniture you might want to have a yard sale. All this will involve is moving everything outside on the day of the sale. Of course you will have to let everyone know about it. The easiest way to do that is an ad in the local paper and some flyers around town.
Hit the net – Doesn’t everyone organize everything online these days? I’m pretty sure it feels that way. Put it up on Craiglist or e-Bay and let people find you. Remember to include nice pictures, and when people come to view it you should have it outside so you don’t let strangers in your home.
Phone a used furniture dealer – I’d only choose this option if it’s in good condition, but you could call up a furniture dealer and ask him to buy if from you. He will probably come in his truck and make you an offer on the spot if he wants it. This is an easy way to get rid of it, but you won’t get top dollar.
Help someone out – If you are struggling to find a new home for it then instead of wasting your time looking for somewhere it might be better to give it away. If your family doesn’t want it I’m sure there is a charity shop somewhere that will take it off your hands. Someone would love it.
