Normally when we do a lot of work on a room it’s because we want to completely redesign it or because we are making some kind of extension or addition. In other words, we will often transform a room, or do nothing to it at all, and normally there’s some kind of motivation for doing this such as a desire to sell the property, or to move someone else into the room or because one of our children are moving out.
However this shouldn’t be the only time that we really think about giving a room a fresh lick of pain (literally) and rejuvenating it. In other words, you can still do a lot of work on your property and make it smarter, even if you are basically happy with it to begin with. Think making the same room, just better rather than going for something completely new. This will ensure your rooms don’t look tired or old, but will also be much cheaper than completely replacing everything.
Here we will look at some ways to do this.
Replastering:
Replastering the room means basically redoing the plastering on the walls, and this will make them look flatter and smoother rather than being lumpy and old looking. This will make a big difference when you paint or put up wallpaper and it will make the rooms look much more modern.
Paint:
You think your walls are white? They might look white now, but compare this to how they probably looked when you moved in and you’d see that they will have faded and yellowed a lot in that time. Giving your walls a new coating of paint will ensure that they suddenly look much more vibrant and colourful and this will make a huge impact across all four walls and the ceiling. You should also look into painting your skirting boards and windows etc. and this can make a huge difference too.
Carpets:
Professional carpet cleaning makes a much bigger change to the look of your carpets than does just vacuuming which will still leave some dust and dirt at the base of the carpet fibers. Just like repainting your walls, getting carpet cleaning can show you that the carpet you thought was clean had actually faded and dulled to a very large extent.
Upholstery:
The same goes for your upholstery too – and washing things like your sofa covers and cushions properly in the washing machine will again bring out their color and make them look much better.
Ornaments: First and foremost you should of course thoroughly clean your ornaments and this means washing them in order to get any dust out of the small crevices and gaps. At the same time though you should also think long and hard about removing the ornaments that you don’t really need. Something that most rooms would really benefit from is just fewer items which would result in a less cluttered look as well as making the nicer items you have stand out more.
Replacing: Meanwhile replacing one or two aspects of your room that look tired can also make a big difference. Getting a bigger and more modern looking TV screen for example can have a surprisingly positive impact on a room, while you might likewise opt to replace one of your cabinets with something new to again bring a different feel to the rooms.
