Our home is very much an outward projection of our internal state. The condition of our home reflects our mood, it reflects our stress levels and it reflects our preferences and our personalities. This is part of the reason that decorating is so much fun – because it enables us to communicate who we are and how we see ourselves, and because it allows guests to learn about us just from looking around. It’s for the same reasons that we enjoy decorating and filling in our Facebook page then that we enjoy decorating our rooms and that we take such pride in it.
But if we really want our rooms to tell people who we are, then why are they so devoid of personality in so many cases? If your room consists of a furniture set you got from a home store and a mirror on the wall, then really this doesn’t say much about you and it’s not really going to feel like home. Here then we’ll look at some ways to make your rooms more ‘you’ and to tell the story of who you are and what you enjoy.
Pictures
First of all, your room should include some pictures. This is very important because pictures can literally show the things in your life that are closest to you (your family and friends hopefully) while at the same time showing snapshots from your life and what you’ve done. There are many ways you can display these too, whether you want to have a collage hanging somewhere (which has the added bonus of being home made) or whether you want to display them in a photo frame designed for multiple pictures – you can find some great designs for this that show your pictures on sides of a cube or that let you rotate hanging pictures.
Color Scheme
Most of us have a few colors that we consider to be our favorite or that people associate with us, and by displaying these colors predominantly we can make the room very ‘us’. If your room is a mess of colors and has too many things in it then no one or two colors will stand out as the prevailing theme, so try to focus on just a couple and your room will have more identity as a result.
Collections
Most of us have some favorite music and some favorite films and displaying our collections can help people to get a bit of a picture of who we are. One way to do this with CDs that’s quite artistic is to get a few CD cases and stick them together to hang on the wall. This can create a tiled look that shows off some of your favorite music and bands and that’s also very creative.
Ornament
As with the colors, the secret to making your ornaments tell a story about who you are is to not have too many so that the ones which are there will stand out more and make more of an impact. Choose a few favorites and give them a prominent position.
At the same time note that these don’t have to be ornaments in the ‘classic’ sense – there’s nothing wrong with having an old retro toy that you used to play with out which can be a geek chic addition, or having out a guitar that’s been well loved. Even a pair of jeans hung on a wall or an old school t-shirt with signatures on it can tell a story.
Things You’ve Made
Making items shows off your creativity and also allows you to add a little personal flare to things. For instance if you do ceramics then having something you’ve painted on the coffee table will show off a hobby of yours while at the same time being a great and completely unique item.
