The day is over and it’s time for a rest. Sleep comes easily after a hard day’s work; well, at least for some. Making sure that your bedroom gives off the best possible vibes for sleep is essential if you’re going to get that good night’s rest and be fresh to face the new day. So what needs to be done to that sleeping space? How can you make your bedroom a serene retreat, ready to lull you to a peaceful night’s sleep away from the worries of the world?
Work in the Bed?
There is nothing worse for a good night’s sleep than work squirreling through your brain, yet some people still insist on reading that final report or two in bed. One of the most important things to ensure a good night’s sleep is a segregation of day and night. We’re always told to separate work from play: don’t take work home with you, avoid your emails on holiday and the like. Well, the same applies to night time. If you’re in the middle of something in the home, yet are heading to bed, don’t take it with you. Every worry that you have in the day time should be left alone outside of the bedroom, leaving your sleeping space free for sleep alone.
Other common disturbances are things like food in the sheets, using a laptop before you shut your eyes or even watching TV. Eating causes your stomach to work, meaning that your sleep will be interrupted, while by doing something that causes the brain or even just the eyes to be extremely active can interrupt your sleep patterns: your brain will keep working on these problems, on the computer game or whatever for a time after you turn the power off. Instead, escape from reality before bed. Read a book or just meditate.
Tidy! Clutter is Not Your Friend
If there is one thing that contributes more than anything else to a lack of restful sleep, however, it is clutter and mess. An unclean room contains dust that will inhibit your breathing while an untidy room will suck away all that air – leaving you gasping for breath as you try to pass into a deep sleep. It’s been proven that not only is the feng shui of your room important: place your bed in some space not a corner, don’t put your TV in the room and on and on; but the state you keep your things is essential. If you undress and just drop your clothes on the floor or if you leave makeup or playing cards or whatever scattered across the surfaces, you’re trapping yourself in an environment that is stale and unreceptive. To really appreciate your night’s sleep, you need to unclutter your room as well as your mind.
So, What Can You Do About It
Essentially it is simple. An hour or so before you plan to go to bed, clear out everything you don’t need and make space in your bedroom. Tidy away your books and your clothes and dust the surfaces if they’re dirty. Then leave the room. Take a book and snuggle up in your favourite chair somewhere else. Have a nice cup of hot chocolate or milk or even decaffeinated tea to prepare you for sleep and then just relax. Once you feel your eyelids drooping or you just feel it is time, put the book down and go to your bed. Sleep will come much easier.
Apart from this, getting the most out of your storage is essential. Keeping your books, toys, games, clothes or whatever else you have out of the way is essential to a tidy room, so invest in some clean and simple furniture: bookshelves, cabinets and large wardrobes that hide everything away neat and tidy.
