To Hire or Not to Hire

A moving experience can vary from person to person. Some people move down the block while others move across the country. Whatever the distance involved, you may be in a situation where you are considering whether you should hire a moving team or if you should attempt to move yourself. This is a common debate and the option that is right for you will depend on a few different things.

The first thing that will help you make a decision on whether to start looking at moving companies is the distance involved in the move. The greater the distance, the more likely people are to hire a team to help them move. While this isn’t always the case, certain people can be intimidated when moving long distances themselves.

The second argument in whether you should go the DIY route or start looking at moving companies is time. If you are moving from one town to another and you’re on a tight schedule, you simply may not have the time to commit to moving yourself. There are a host of reasons why you might not have time to make the move yourself, and if you don’t have the time then a moving company may be the better choice.

Another thing to consider is your budget. Hiring a moving service can be expensive and if your budget doesn’t allow for this sort of expense, then the choice is clear, you’ll have to move yourself. One the other hand, if you have the financial flexibility to afford a moving service, you’ll need to ask yourself if moving on your own is worth the savings.

Moving yourself may require you to use a larger than normal vehicle or a moving truck. Here are a few questions to ask yourself before you take this option:

Are you comfortable driving long distances in a large moving truck? Have you ever driven a similar type of vehicle in the past? Do you need to tow an additional vehicle in addition to driving a big truck? If so, are you prepared to drive with that extra load? Do you have the necessary manpower to load and unload the moving truck when you reach your destination? Lastly, if you decide on hiring a company, remember to look around and compare several different moving services. Make sure the moving company doesn’t have any hidden fees that they tack on to a moving bill. Without a guaranteed price, you may find yourself unable to get your personal belongings until the bill is settled. Nothing is worse than moving to a new home and having that home sit empty of all your possessions because the moving service refuses to release your stuff until the bill is paid.

Whether you should move yourself or utilize a moving company is something only you can determine. By taking the time to consider what is in your best interest from a standpoint of ability, convenience and affordability, you’ll be able to come up with a moving solution that works best for your individual situation.
