As hobbies go, carpentry is one of the more useful and the more impressive but is unfortunately still fairly rare. The most common hobbies people seem to enjoy tend to be things that require a little less physical effort and this normally means things like painting or computer games which can be a lot of fun and even creative in the former case, but don’t have quite the same large number of practical benefits as carpentry, nor do they come with the same sense of achievement. Here we will look at why carpentry is such a great hobby and list a few great reasons to consider taking it up.
It’s Not As Hard As You Think…
So why don’t most people take up carpentry if it’s so great? Well simply a lot of people just don’t think of it as a hobby they can do. Some people literally won’t even consider it because it’s so far off their radar, but in other cases it’s because they don’t think it’s something they would be capable of doing. However the reality is that actually it’s fairly easy for anyone to get started in carpentry if they’re willing to start out with some slightly more basic projects and if they turn their hand to an area of the hobby that they excel in.
It’s Rewarding
It’s one thing to make something that’s great to look at and that is attractive on your walls, but it’s quite another to create something that you can actually use, and that you can get your guests using and that helps you get by. Not only do you this way get to feel smug when someone asks you where you got your chair, but you can also feel much more ‘capable’ (we all love that word) and as though you’re really self-dependent.
You Can Save, Or Even Earn, Money
You can also save money by making your own furniture as this of course means that you don’t need to buy so much from the store. Sure you’ll pay for materials and tools, but this is a lot less than the amount that you pay simply for the privilege of using furniture designed by ‘professionals’.
Better yet, if you get really good at carpentry then you can stand to earn a lot of money this way. My Mum recently bought some nice wooden gates off of a family friend which earned him some money, and we’ve had two more people ask where we got them earning him yet more business.
Your Home Will Look Completely Unique
If you have home-made furniture in your property this means that you will have furniture that is made specifically for your particular décor meaning it will ideally match the look of your home. At the same time, you can feature this furniture in your home knowing full well that no-one else in the world will have it – which can make you feel rather smug…
It’s a Transferrable Skill
When you learn carpentry you don’t just learn carpentry – rather you will generally become more capable and professional and you will find that you are generally better at DIY all round. You can use skills and understanding that you learn making furniture to then fix things that go wrong around the house, and to build things that don’t even involve woodwork because you’ll generally be more confident and yes, capable.
